SUMMARY OF SKILLS
Joyce Jenje Makwenda was born on the 24th March 1958 in Harare (Salisbury) - An award winning Producer, Journalist, Artist and Ethnomusicologist. She is also an Independent Scholar, Archivist, Historian, Researcher, Author, Lecturer, and she gives talks on a number of topics. She has 38 years of working experience covering areas of early urban culture, music, politics, education, religion, media, fashion, sex and sexuality (taboo issues) and cultural issues and women’s histories in Zimbabwe. A renowned writer who has written a number of books and novels that include, Zimbabwe Township Music (2005), which has been widely read locally and internationally. In 2006 she published Gupuro in Shona which was translated into English and published as Divorce-Token and in 2007 she went on to write USenzeni in Ndebele (Zulu) the two books are on women’s issues and the girl child respectively. In 2013 she published another book and diary notebook on Women Musicians of Zimbabwe 1930’s-2013 - A Struggle for Voice and Artistic Expression (2013). In the same year 2013 she went on to publish Women Parliamentarians and Politicians in Zimbabwe which has had a number of editions. Her latest book is – Demystifying Taboos ….And Sex – The Mother of All Humanity (A compilation of the articles that she wrote on the topic –sex and sexuality from 2009-2011 and 2014-2016)
She is working on publishing a number of books some of them complete and some which are almost complete - Women in Film in Zimbabwe – Modern Storytellers, Women Writers and Poets in Zimbabwe - The power of the written and spoken word, Zimbabwean Women in Theatre, Drama and Comedy - An Artistic Way of Communicating.
A dynamic storyteller and radio personality who did work for local and international radios. Radio being one of the most powerful mediums of disseminating information, Joyce has used radio to tell the story of Zimbabwe music. She worked with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) to compile a radio program on Township Jazz of the 50's-1992 (1992); produced a 13 week Radio Program for ZBC on Early Musicians (Shona & Ndebele) 1992 - researched, compiled and presented radio programs on Township Music 1930s–1960s. Conducted research and presented radio programs on Music as Social History, for the Audio Visual Services, for the Ministry of Education and Culture in 1994.
Joyce Jenje Makwenda has produced a number of film/television documentaries which have won awards, including Zimbabwe Township Music 1930’s-1960’s (1992).
She produced and directed several other documentaries on music, including - A Christmas to Remember - With Early Township Dwellers - December (1994); Omasiganda–African Troubadours - One man band guitarists (1995); The Epworth Theatrical Strutters – Musical Group from the 1940s. (1997); The Bantu Actors/Mattaka Family (A Family Musical Group which goes back to the 30's) – (1998); - Development Through Radio (DTR)/ Rural Radio Listening Clubs Project-How this program helped in Women’s Development: (2001) Pre-Election Violence and its after Effects on Women and Children–2002, - Empowering Womn Artists on Profitable Digital Marketing (2021)
Jenje Makwenda been a lecture since 1990 - at the Zimbabwe College of Music for 15 years and she helped design the curricular on The History of Popular Music and Jazz, for the Zimbabwe College of Music, Ethnomusicology Department. She also introduced Gender Studies in Music and also compiled a Gender in Music Handbook, which is yet to be published. She also set tests and examinations and marked the tests and examinations. When Joyce was reading for her Master’s Degree in Music at Witwatersrand University in South Africa she lectured undergraduates in the music department for the whole semester in African Music with a focus on Zimbabwean Music and she also set an examination paper for the course.
Jenje Makwenda was also a Lecturer at the Zimbabwe Film and Television School of Southern Africa (ZIFTESSA) on Music and Film (2010). She has also been a part time lecturer at Music Crossroads from 2016.
Joyce Jenje Makwenda has invested her time in trying to demystify the notion of viewing Sex and sexuality as taboo issues by writing about the issues and also giving talks to different groups of society, amongst them the young, the old, women, men and couples. Joyce won an award for writing about sex and sexuality which was the first to be won by a journalist in Southern Africa - Special award The Triple T award - "tackling taboo topics" (New Category) – Gender Links/GEMSA Awards (2010).
A skilled researcher and who has presented a number of papers on various discourses such as music and on social issues - locally and internationally. As a way of documenting women’s histories in 2007, she was Executive Producer of the CD–Women’s Voices of Zimbabwe/Four Daughters where she took four young women and they sang 12 songs of women musicians from the 50’s - 70’s. She has researched on history of women in Zimbabwe on the following- music, film, literature, politics, journalism, and the informal sector, history of women’s organisation, culinary arts, painting, sculptor, photography, fashion, sex and sexuality, the kitchen as an institution. While most of the research is based in Zimbabwe she also looks at Southern Africa and Africa, and have featured the women in different publication locally, in Southern Africa and Africa and internationally.
Jenje Makwenda is a woman, who initiates and executes ideas. She established in Zimbabwe, one of the biggest private social history collection/archive at her house (her three-bedroom cottage), which consists of interviews on music, on audio and video, and most of it transcribed and also press cuttings, photos, LP’s and music artefacts, such as gramophones, typewriters etc. for scholarly and historical purposes, and for posterity.
Joyce Jenje Makwenda has strong organisational skills, because of her management skills she has managed to lead and fundraise for a number of organisations to be viable institutions, for example the Federation of Media Women of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe Women in Contemporary Culture Trust - for the past 30 years she has been working with the Zimbabwe Women in Contemporary Culture Trust (ZWICCT) in various capacities as a Trustee and then Coordinator and Director of the organisation.

The research dates back to the 1950’s –today, with reference to as far back as 1400 (pre-colonial). Have also interviewed recent women parliamentarians mostly those who were involved in the GNU (Government of National Unity 2009-2013) (The interviews are on audio and video).
